JFK Leadership Profile Essay - 1135 Words

â€Å"Land of the free, home of the brave†, the United States has stood amongst the most powerful and influential countries of the world for decades and decades. In order to maintain said reputation, the country needs a leader just as strong and influential. In the early 1960s the United States had a leader who was a leader among leaders and had the respect of an entire nation. John Fitzgerald Kennedy was the 35th President, who took office on January 20, 1961- but before that Kennedy was a World War II hero, a United States Senator, and published a book titled Profiles of Courage which won him a Pulitzer Prize (www.famouspeople.com). Kennedy possessed traits that allowed him to guide the country through three major geopolitical events†¦show more content†¦After enrolling in business school in Stanford, in 1940, â€Å"Jack [John Kennedy] publicly registered for the first peacetime draft in US history and his number was the 18th drawn† (Ward, 2005); he d id not pass the Army’s physical and spent an entire summer working on his physical condition and health. Kennedy used his father’s political influence to get him into the Navy. In the mind of Kennedys, the United States Navy was the â€Å"ivy league† of the military branches and sticking with his families urge to maintain public image, he did not want to enlist in the Army. From a young age, Kennedy showed strong leadership skills; he led by example. As a training officer, on one of the PT boats he commanded, they became stuck on ground and wanted to know what was under there, â€Å"rather than send somebody else over the side, he went over himself. He didnt say to the executive officer, ‘You go over and look.’ He did it himself. He knew there are certain dangers in going over it† (Wood, 2005). By going over the side of the boat to see what they were stuck on, Kennedy demonstrated that he was no better than any of his men and no task was bene ath him to complete personally. This is the sign of a true leader. Leaders have an inner desire to better themselves; he was not content with just being a training officer. Hamiltons Crusade Essay Example For Students

Hamiltons Crusade Essay When the revolutionary war was over, the American colonists found themselves free of British control. Now that they were free, they wanted to create their own system of government where the tyranny and the arbitrariness of the British monarchy of old, would be diminished. Originally, The Articles of Confederation thinly united the thirteen states. This document had given the central government no power to do what was needed. The central government had no power to tax they only had the power to ask the states for money. They also had no money to pay for an army to settle domestic disputes or fight off invaders. These weaknesses and others in The Articles of Confederation caused the people to consider amending the Articles that would correct these wrongs and at the same time protecting the interests of the states. So in 1787, the states sent delegates to a convention in Philadelphia to amend the Articles. It did not take long for the delegates to scrap the Articles and to start writing a new document, the Constitution. Even this new document created controversy. The American people were divided into two groups: the federalists, with Alexander Hamilton as the leader, and the anti-federalists or Jeffersonians because they were led by Thomas Jefferson. The federalists believed that the Constitution itself was good enough where as the Jeffersonians thought that it would not protect the rights of the people. But both however decided that the government should be based on the principles of federalism. The Bill of Rights was added to the Constitution, to help the ratification of it and to insure the rights of the people. The Federalist, a series of papers, was written to get support of the Constitution in New York. These papers were written under the pseudonym, Publius. The papers were actually written by three men: Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and John Jay. Hamilton was the leader of these three for he had written 51 of the 85 The Federalist papers. Through their efforts the New York legislature ratified the Constitution. Even after the Constitution was ratified, the two factions remained divided for several reasons. One reason was the creation of a national bank. Hamilton was very supportive of a national bank and Jefferson was against the idea of a national bank. The descendants of these first two factions are seen today in the Democrats and the Republicans. Alexander Hamilton accomplished many great things for the United States including: calling for a stronger central government, setting up a national bank and a plan for economic growth and inadvertently starting the two-party system. Alexander Hamilton the Revolutionary and the Pater FamiliasAlexander Hamilton was born on January 11, 1755 (or 1757 according to Hamilton) on the West Indies Island of Nevis in the town Charleston. He was born out of wedlock to Rachel Faucitt Lavien and James Hamilton, who would later abandon the family in 1765. A local clergyman, Reverend Hugh Knox, raised funds to send Alexander away to school in 1773. He entered Kings College (Columbia University) in 1774. At the age of 19 he wrote a pamphlet, A Full Vindication of the Measures of Congress. This was in response to a Torys pamphlet that called the Continental Congress a parcel of upstart lawless Committee-men.1 Alexander defended in his pamphlet that the Congress was an august body of men famed for their patriotism and abilities. In the Revolutionary War, he distinguished himself in the eyes of General Washington, and in 1777, Washington asked him to be one of his six aide-de-camps (secretaries) with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Hamiltons main job was to, as Washington said, think for me, as well as execute orders. .ucd26789bc2f0f4048b20c5acb05f1f8d , .ucd26789bc2f0f4048b20c5acb05f1f8d .postImageUrl , .ucd26789bc2f0f4048b20c5acb05f1f8d .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ucd26789bc2f0f4048b20c5acb05f1f8d , .ucd26789bc2f0f4048b20c5acb05f1f8d:hover , .ucd26789bc2f0f4048b20c5acb05f1f8d:visited , .ucd26789bc2f0f4048b20c5acb05f1f8d:active { border:0!important; } .ucd26789bc2f0f4048b20c5acb05f1f8d .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ucd26789bc2f0f4048b20c5acb05f1f8d { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ucd26789bc2f0f4048b20c5acb05f1f8d:active , .ucd26789bc2f0f4048b20c5acb05f1f8d:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ucd26789bc2f0f4048b20c5acb05f1f8d .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ucd26789bc2f0f4048b20c5acb05f1f8d .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ucd26789bc2f0f4048b20c5acb05f1f8d .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ucd26789bc2f0f4048b20c5acb05f1f8d .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ucd26789bc2f0f4048b20c5acb05f1f8d:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ucd26789bc2f0f4048b20c5acb05f1f8d .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ucd26789bc2f0f4048b20c5acb05f1f8d .ucd26789bc2f0f4048b20c5acb05f1f8d-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ucd26789bc2f0f4048b20c5acb05f1f8d:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Interview with a Black Market Worker Essay He rode beside Washington in the battles at Brandywine, Germantown and Monmouth. The human resource managers are therefore faced with a big challenge of making sure that their employees get the best from the organization so that they can equally perform well. Among the major concerns of the human resource managers is ensuring that their employees do not undergo discrimination in their work place. This paper is therefore an analysis of the current issue s related to employment discrimination that the HR mangers ought to be aware of and thereafter a recommendation of the actions to be taken by the HR mangers to avoid discrimination. Current (timely) issues related to employment discrimination that HR managers need to be aware of Employment discrimination entails creation of a distinction between the employees so that some of them are disadvantaged as others become advantaged during the times of recruitment, termination, promotion among other human resource processes. Discrimination in the work place can take many forms such as sex, race, age, physical and mental disability, religion and political differences. It could also take different directions, in that discrimination could either come from the employer or from the other working staff of higher or even lower ranks (Hemphill, and Haines, 1998, p.4). The fact that discrimination can take many forms; it is therefore the obligation of the human resource managers to beware of any pos sible causes and instances of the discrimination within the work place. Some of the issue that could lead to discrimination and the human resource mangers ought to be informed of include; Job advertisement– During the publication of a job vacancy, the human resource managers have to be careful that the information provided does no indicate even the slightest sign of any form of discrimination. For example, unless the job is suited for males only, they should not indicate that they require only male applicants yet the females are able to perform the job. Job description– This is a common instance where discrimination is likely to occur once the employee has accepted the job. Most employers have recently been advertising jobs without or with less information on the job description and thereafter overloading the employee with many duties to perform (Hemphill, and Haines, 1998, p.4). To avoid this, the HR officers should make the job description available even during inte rviews so that the employee may be in a position to know what they are up to. Application forms- This again is an issue of concern in that the forms to be filled may be indicating instances of discrimination thus disadvantaging a certain group of people. Interviews– The human resource mangers conducting the interviews should be pretty ware of the legislation laws governing employees. They should therefore have made good plans and forethought before the interview. In addition, it is advisable to have an external interviewer so as to avoid incidences of discrimination. Occupational safety and health requirements- The employers ought to be responsible for the health and safety of their employees in the workplace. Despite the employee differences, all should be safeguarded from any hazards and risks within the workplace. Apart from the aforementioned issues, the human resources mangers should also ensure that other human resource responsibilities such as reward systems, training , performance appraisal are equally distributed or rather given on merit so as to avoid cases of discrimination in the work place. Recommended actions for HR managers to help them ensure on an ongoing basis that their organization is not engaging in such discrimination Discrimination of employees is a crime that is punishable in the court of law. This therefore calls for all employers as well as their human resource managers to avoid any possible instances of discrimination set they are persecuted (Garcez, 2006, p.1). Not only will the company spend huge sums of money in the case, but they will also create a bad image in the society which will destroy their good reputation. There are several recommended ways through which the human resources can avoid instances of discrimination in their work place. Some of these include;Advertising Looking for essay on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Use of best practices decisions during the process of recruiting, promotion, retrenchment, or layoffs Due to the fact that these processes are some of the instances during which discrimination could occur, the human resource mangers ought to be careful when carrying out these obligations. The best way of avoiding this is through use of a variety of techniques of hiring or recruiting new employees such as open houses, recruitment firms or even scholar programs. Decisions to promote or lay off workers should be based on satisfactory or unsatisfactory work respectively and not on language or race differences. Taking the appropriate procedures to prevent or correct discrimination instances The human resource managers should follow the requirements of the EEOC that require that every organization should have a discrimination policy which both the employers and employees should sign. The EEOC officers offer training and guidance on the course of action to be taken in instances of discrimination. This therefor e ensures that once both parties sign and attest to the policy each is responsible for any consequences that arise if the policy is gone against (Garcez, 2006, p.1). Equal treatment of the employees Since most organizations will consist of people from different races, religions, geographical locations among other differences it is important that the human resource managers treat all the employees in the same way. The only differences that should be present in the organization should be in terms of the ranks or positions whereby there are those who have authority over others. This authority should however b e confused and used as a point of discriminating others. Conclusion From the above discussion on current issues that the human resource managers should be aware of concerning discrimination in the work place, it can be deduced that discrimination is something that could occur even without the HR mangers noticing. And since discrimination is a criminal offence punishable in the cou rt of law, the human resource managers should be careful when performing their daily errands to avoid discriminating their employees (Legge, 2004, p.102). Given the aforementioned recommendations of preventing discrimination in the organizations, it is thus possible to achieve a discrimination free global work place. This will therefore ensure that employees are free to work in any organization without the fear of being discriminated. Reference List Armstrong, M. (1999).
